Katanning Hosts Historic TeamGym Event

The Southern Regional Gymnastics Association (SRGA) ran their first ever TeamGym competition on Saturday 7 November at the Katanning Leisure Centre.

In what has been a challenging year, this event was pitched as a fun way to bring the southern regional gymnastics community together before the close of the year.

A grand total of 108 athletes from Great Southern, Esperance and Narrogin participated in the competition with the teams split into two sessions to adhere to COVID-19 physical distancing restrictions.

The highly engaged audience were wowed by the thrilling team performances on floor, mini-trampoline and tumbling.

"It was nice, fast and interactive" said Sharon Woods Esperance Twilight Aerials Head Coach.

"This was the biggest squad we ever had for any competition."

"We love that you get to have fun and dance" said Narrogin athletes Shyla and Talise.

"We just like competing in a team and the fact we landed all our skills."

Gymnastics WA's Senior Community Engagement Coordinator, Abid Imam was on hand to assist SRGA for the event.

"Congratulations to Helen Westley from SRGA, as well as everyone from Great Southern, Esperance and Narrogin for embracing TeamGym during this disrupted year." said Abid Imam.

"The teams performed impressively despite only being recently introduced to TeamGym."

"The sky is the limit with how engaging participation programs like this can continue to grow across WA."

During the presentations, Great Southern Gymsports head coach Serena Sandwell informed the audience that 2020 is indeed the centenary year for Gymnastics in town with the original Katanning Gymnastics Club holding their first ever committee meeting on 2 June, 1920!

With the inaugural TeamGym event complete, it is hoped that this will provide a great springboard into the future for gymnastics in the region.
