Jubilation, laughter and tears at this year’s GWA Awards.
Saturday, 11 March was a night full of celebrations. A vibrant crowd of some 200 guests enjoyed the gala ceremony and dinner held at Novotel Langley Perth. It was wonderful to see everyone looking fabulous in their suits and gowns, hidden behind some fabulous masks… from Carnivale to Chewbacca.
Stacey Umeh, a much-loved gymnastics personality and host for the evening, kicked the night off and introduced Ruth Gibbons, Executive Director of GWA, to officially open the festivities.
The Official of the Year was presented to Tracy Holmes, who judged in excess of thirty sessions across the state competition calendar and represented Western Australia as a judge at the Combs la Ville, France. Martine George and Nikolai Lapchine shared The Coach of the Year Award, together achieving great results both nationally and across the globe.
The night also saw many tears shed with the retirements of Olivia Brown, Paige James, Olivia Vivian, Cairo Leicester and Lauren Mitchell. These women have been exemplary in their sport. Thanks was given for their contributions and dedication to gymnastics and for inspiring thousands of young gymnasts across the country.
Emily Little was announced The GWA Athlete of the Year. The Artistic Gymnastics superstar is the back-to-back winner of this award and also received the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) International Levels Senior Athlete of the Year Award.
Peggy Liddick, retired National Coach of Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, was the special guest for the evening. Peggy entertained the audience by sharing some personal moments and highlights of her career.
The final, most anticipated award, was the 2016 GWA Champion Club of the Year, awarded to the most successful club across all Gymsports. Northern Districts Gymnastics Academy took home the award for the fourth year in a row.
Congratulations to all of the finalists and winners for 2016. GWA would like to thank everyone for attending the 2016 GWA Awards, with special thanks going to all the sponsors and to the GWA event organising committee. It was the biggest and most successful awards night to date.
